Last Tuesday was the first day of spring – a day that didn’t go unappreciated here at imogene + willie. in fact, everyone in the store was in such an acute state of spring fever that we decided to play hooky for a few hours to whip up a little celebratory mixtape for your listening pleasure.
like our other mixes, this guy’s got a little bit of this, a tad smidge of that, and whole lot of fun packed into 18 tracks. we suggest listening to it outside on your lunch break, standing barefoot in the grass with your face tilted up toward our friend the sun. nothing like vitamin D and happy tunes to wipe away any remaining vestiges of the winter blahs. just wear sunscreen.
welcome, spring!

“The Roost” – Margolnick
Taylorsville (2010)
This song puts a smile on my face and makes me want to dance. If that doesn’t say spring, I don’t know what does.
-Elise
“Hold On” – Alabama Shakes
Hold On – Single (2012)
This song just makes me want to go to the lake with friends, lay on a blanket in the grass, and crack open a Negra Modelo.
-Chad
“Little Pleasures” (feat. Garvin Turek) – Tokimonsta
Creature Dreams (2011)
The flicker of light through the leaves on my speeding car; the haze of a summer in youth; the reflection of my smile in your sunglasses.
-Ian
“We Don’t Eat” – James Vincent McMorrow
Early In The Morning (2010)
I love the simplicity of James’s voice. It resonates with me and makes me feel like spring is in the air! If you don’t already have this record you should get it NOW!
-Matt
“I’ve Got This Friend” – The Civil Wars
Barton Hollow (2011)
After having just moved here in December I was introduced to The Civil Wars and now in these days that feel like spring their songs just make me feel right at home in Tennessee. I can sit back and watch the wind dancing in the trees to the rhythm of their music… swaying back and forth.
-Kristen
“I’m Waiting For The Day” – The Beach Boys
Pet Sounds (1966)
This song is my favorite on a record that is an obvious go-to for warmer weather. I love a happy sounding song that turns out to not be so happy.
-Jonathan
“Fools Gold” – The Stone Roses
The Stone Roses (Remastered) (2004)
I think this portion of the lyrics say it best; “These boots weren’t made for walking / The marquis de sade never made no boots like these / Gold’s just around the corner…”
-Brian
“Teenage Wristband” – The Twilight Singers
Blackberry Belle (2003)
Loved this song for years and still every time I hear it, it makes me want to be driving with the windows down on a spring afternoon. Great album.
-Jay
“I’ll Be Around” – Bobby Bare Jr.
Young Criminals’ Starvation League (2002)
Bobby wrote this song for our dear friend Michael Pontes years ago. Bobby sang it at the top of his lungs at Pontes’ memorial service last week. I’ll put it on every mix I make probably forever, in memory.
-Carrie
“I Can” – Nas
God’s Son (2002)
I like the way this song sounds and what it says. It makes me feel like spring.
-Juan
“Court and Spark” – Joni Mitchell
Court and Spark (1974)
Joni Mitchell always feels like spring. Like newness and fresh life. I love her and true love lasts a lifetime.
-Brandy
“Sunday Morning” – Margo Guryan
Take A Picture (1968)
Any kind of Astrud Gilberto’ish music usually blasts out of my windows at home during spring cleaning, and this song always seems to make me feel super sunshine’y. Like “coffee and toast on a blanket in the yard” kind of sunshine’s.
-Jessica
“Keep Feeling (Fascination)” – The Human League
The Very Best of the Human League (2005)
One of those songs that never gets old, especially if you’re listening to it on repeat, with the top down. A synth classic – and for some reason, I always want to listen to synth in the spring.
-Libby
“Mirror” – Lil Wayne
THA CARTER IV (2011)
I like this song because like it says, every day I have to look in the mirror and see the man that I am. I never want to be the man of my past, and have to keep looking forward to the positive future.
-Alan
“What A Wonderful World” – Anne Murray
What A Wonderful World (1999)
I love this song because it talks about God’s creation and how beautiful it is. It cheers us up and makes us happy. This female version is my favorite.
-Gloria
“He Lives” – Various Artists
20 Favourite Hymns (2007)
I always have hope when I hear this song. When I have a problem or stress, I just remember He lives.
-Nestor
